Oh, powerful Xolotl,
knife in mouth,
bringer of fire and lightning,
lord of the malformed.
How you now float, staring,
unable to tell a worm from a rock,
devourer of snails,
Fire and lightning no more.
You have birthed Suns,
guided souls beyond this world.
Smoke billowed from your mouth,
replaced by desperate gulps of air.
Jailed in a plastic tote,
fearful of the sun you once revived,
no thoughts in your empty eyes.
What are you hiding, Gary?
There were four fish,
then three, then two, then one,
gobbled while our backs were turned.
What happened to Mackenzie, Gary?!
Have I been fooled by your pathetic smile,
your gaping nature?
Have you really illuminated the heavens,
oh great deity Xolotl?
You are timeless, Gary,
floating in meditative silence,
deterred by no current,
in perfect stillness.
What fire you have witnessed,
what death and rebirth.
You, who have guided suns through the afterlife,
come to offer silence.
We have fallen far,
died a death of sorts,
burned out, extinguished.
But still, Gary, you must eat.
The sickness, the betrayal, the loss.
Was it not you, Gary, Xolotl,
who cried so at your own double-cross
that your eyes melted away?
Where is the wrath, Gary,
when I forgot to feed you?
In an underworld of my own making,
you wait, patient, empty, floating.
Wise Xolotl, freed from anger,
reduced in form, reduced in mind,
once-patron of deathly games,
what brought you here?
Where was my guide, Xolotl,
as I trekked through hell?
Blinded, desparate for light.
I suppose you’re just Gary now.
Your fire extinguished,
your rage gone.
You only gaze now.
Are you really so empty, Gary?
Or are you tired, like I,
of the thunder, of the searing darkness?
What have you discovered, Xolotl,
to give you such lasting peace?
What granted you the power
to float so freely, mindlessly, at ease?
Five suns, yet no scars.
Only an empty gaze.
You seem to have found rest,
As you drift, gazing at the shadows.
I ask only, Gary, Xolotl,
you one day teach me how to float.
Oh Garyyy😔
(although, of course, he is a mortal being like us too)
